Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (2024)

Hunter X Hunter is one of the most well-known anime series filled with adventure, friendship, battles, and more. With its memorable cast of characters and the endless hiatus that fans had to commiserate through, there is a dedicated audience to the series with a lot of love for it and even more opinions to share.

The fans joined together on Reddit, discussing the show and what they liked, disliked, and details they felt could have been improved, some of which could be considered unpopular opinions—Kurapika's flawed personality, Illumi's protection of Killua, Komugi as an underestimated character, and plenty more.

Illumi Was Protecting Killua

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (1)

Illumi is very much in the gray area between good and evil. Though his attention tends to lean on the darker side and his benefit in mind—being a strong member of the Phantom Troupe—his agendas are still shrouded in mystery. He had a grip over Killua for most of the series, and being his big brother, it isn't clear if it was meant to protect him or not.

RNGTree on Reddit believes he was protecting Killua the only way he knew how and said, "Biscuit mentioned the control illumi forced applied on Killua was a form of 'smothering love,' twisted form of love, but still it was his way to protect Killua.Illumi could also foresee the ‘hurt’ Killua will have to face (like the ‘Rage Gon’ incident). That’s also why when Killua was in the hospital waiting for Alluka to wake up and heal Gon, Tsubone said 'How tragic…When he was being controlled, he suffered less.'"

Genthru Is An Overrated Character

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (2)

Genthru, or 'The Bomber,' is an antagonist introduced during the Greed Island arc and one of the first villains fans see that doesn't seem to have any reason for doing wrong other than to do it. His character didn't have much complexity to him. While some appreciated this for his character, others believed he was overrated.

Reddit user JAB282018 shares their opinion by saying, "I feel that if anybody on this show was to be labeled overrated then Genthru surely fit the bill.Genthru only requesting that his beat-up friend get healed as if the show was trying to somehow half-ass outline that Genthru wasn't completely selfish, evil, and had some good character qualities regardless of the fact that Genthru beat, killed, and robbed from many players throughout the whole Greed Island arc."

All The Fights Are Unsatisfying

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (3)

Hunter X Hunterhas diverse characters with original Nen abilities and fighting styles. Unfortunately, not all their fighting sequences are that interesting or have anticlimatic resolutions that disappoint the fans.

Most of the battles are broken up by loads of dialogue or end before they even begin. Fans cannot witness the true extent of some characters' powers. User regrettedcloud wrote on Reddit, "I think almost all fights are unsatisfying (either for being too short or for ending in frustrating ways), except for Gon vs Hisoka at Heavens Arena and Kurapika vs Uvogin (Chrollo vs Hisoka hasn't been animated yet and I think it's hard to follow fights in the manga)."

Pitou Should Have Destroyed Gon

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (4)

Undoubtedly, one of the most shocking moments of the series is when Gon transforms into an older and much more masculine version of himself to avenge Kite and kill Pitou. Pitou had already proved to be one of the strongest Nen users, so some fans were disappointed when this tragic scene happened.

While it is suggested that Gon received all the power he would ever have, some fans don't agree that he should have been able to kill off Pitou so easily. Affectionate-Might-7 on Reddit said, "Adult gon is very very overrated, and pito should’ve destroyed him. Pito jumps across the map in 0.1 to rip off kite's arm, then waits while gon spends 50 years transforming. Knuckle yells at him that his ability is slow making it useless in combat but his transformation took 15x as long."

Greed Island Was The Best Arc

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (5)

While some fans argue that the best arc in the series is the Chimera Ant arc, others believe it was the Greed Island arc because it not only brought the likable characters together but introduced Nen in a completely new and entertaining way.

Reddit user PikachusAnalCavity stated their opinion of this by saying, "Greed Island was a great arc. Great use of the Nen system, awesome training arc, builds up Gon's friendship while showing us some cool adventures. Hisoka teaming up with Gon and Killua was top tier. The arc pulled off a great balance between fun and games with tension and suspense."

Pouf Is The Second Best Antagonist

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (6)

Fans see several different antagonists with complex personalities and motives—the Phantom Troupe, The Bomber, The Chimera Ants, and more. While the Royal Guard were servants under Mereum, they developed their unique personas, especially Pouf.

A [deleted] user on Reddit stated that Pouf was arguably one of the best antagonists because of his lack of humanity. They said, "Yeah Pouf is honestly terrifying. The other royal guards have some sort of humanity to them, but Pouf is unable to be reasoned with. He has one purpose, and no positive emotions towards humans whatsoever.Plus, his various hatsus are extremely dangerous, and he is incredibly intelligent."

Kite Was A Useless Character

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (7)

Kite was potentially one of the most powerful hunters until he met his demise against Pitou to protect Killua and Gon. While his meeting with Gon led to much of Gon's character development, later on, fans don't see how Kite was that important to the story seeing as he died so quickly.

Without Kite fans would not have seen the same Gon transformation, but it felt Kite was only good for that reason alone. He was an interesting character but very short-lived and fans couldn't grow an attachment with him in that small period. Reddit user, PossibleIncident said, "Kite is a useless character with no charisma. I felt nothing when he died and he only works as a plot device for Gon’s development. Hell, his only useful interaction was talking to Gon about Ging."

Most Of The Chimera Ant Arc Was Filler

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (8)

The Chimera Ants were the longest arc in the series and introduced countless new characters. While some fans enjoyed the complexity and artistic direction of the arc, others would disagree and admit it was the most drawn-out arc and a little boring.

With so many new characters added during this arc, the show strayed in several episodes to explain the details and backstory of them. However, these episodes felt much more like filler to the actual story. Reddit user, kthrn02 explained their opinion of this by saying, "The Chimera Ant Arc was extremely long and some of the episodes felt like filler. It definitely got better towards the end but I had to force myself to keep on watching."

Komugi Was Potentially The Most Powerful Character

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (9)

Komugi is a sweet, curious, and compassionate individual introduced during the Chimera Ant arc. Even though she was at first the King's prisoner, her relationship blossomed with him and it evolved into one of the most heartfelt friendships.

Komugi proved she was one of the most intelligent characters due to her ability to adapt and learn new techniques on the fly. Some fans believe she had the potential to be one of the most powerful characters in the show. LemonSalted voiced their opinion by saying, "The most powerful character in the whole show... Is Komugi. I think if she had learned about Nen and used it to FURTHER boost her game? Unthinkable power. It may not be "kill the King real good" power, but it's limitless."

Kurapika Is Flawed and Weak

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit (10)

Kurapika is a fan-favorite character of the series for his moody disposition and his unique abilities and background. However, his whole goal in life is to avenge his fallen Kurta clan, which drove all his actions and ultimately defined him as a character.

User feliz-jueves has a lot to say about Kurapika on Reddit and shared, "Kurapika's identity is only really based on what egregious acts have been committed against him and his family. If and when he kills the Phantom Troupe, he will probably feel indescribable emptiness.I just think his motives are very flawed in a way that will be ultimately detrimental to him."
