Carteret County, NC (June 30, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic three-car collision occurred on June 30, 2024, around 10:30 A.M., resulting in the loss of two lives on NC 58 near Old Church Road in Carteret County.
48-year-old Steven Robert Shelton of Ayden was traveling north on NC 58 when he attempted to pass another vehicle. This maneuver led to a head-on collision with 64-year-old Dale Mangum of Angier, who was heading south. Following this initial collision, Shelton's vehicle also struck a Subaru Outback traveling south.
Mangum and her passenger, 59-year-old Tammy Witham of New Bern, were pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries sustained. Shelton was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. The driver of the third vehicle involved was unharmed.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the accident and, after consulting with the District Attorney's Office, indicated that charges will be forthcoming.
